Gunks 3For years, climbers have been working to get a new campground created in the popular climbing region of New York’s Shawangunk Mountains – or Gunks. Now, they’re finally going to get one.

The new Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground is set to open in Gardiner, New York, on May 15 (weather permitting). The 50-acre campground will include approximately 50 campsites within walking distance to the Trapps and Near Trapps, which have hundreds of rock climbs. Located along Route 299, the campground is also just a short walk from the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center.

Since 2006, the American Alpine Club has been working with The Mohonk Preserve, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission to create a campground near the Gunks.
