Farley Ledges Climbing Area In Western Mass Abruptly Closed

Farley Ledges, a popular climbing spot in western Massachusetts, is currently closed after a private landowner abruptly revoked access.

The Western Mass Climbers Coalition announced the closure of Farley Ledges in Erving, Massachusetts in a social media post on Friday.

“One of the private land owners has asked that no one trespass or climb on their property,” stated the post. “Since it is not possible to access any of the climbing from the wmcc parking lot without crossing their land, we are temporarily closing our lot.”

Coalition members are asking climbers to follow the land owner’s wishes as they work to find a solution. They said they hope to have more updates soon.

Farley is renowned for its striking gneiss formations that include roughly 400 pitches of roped climbing and an equal number of boulder problems.

As the closest major climbing area to Boston, the area sees an estimated 10,000 visitors annually.

In December, the Western Massachusetts Climbers’ Coalition and Access Fund purchased a 70-acre property at Farley Ledges. Officials with the groups said they plan to build a new trailhead and parking lot on the property.
